The Bigard inter-house sports competition finally kicked off officially as anticipated, on 1st March, 2014. At about 2:30pm on that day, the students of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, gathered around the Bigard FIFA field, for the opening ceremony of the event.
It started with a parade taken in turns by the different houses involved in the competition, on their various sporting attire. It was indeed an array of colors at exactly 3:05pm when the parade started, with the Games Moderator, Rev. Fr. Dr. Albert Ikpenwa, taking the salute. The parade was followed by a sonorous chant of the Bigard Anthem.
Rev. Fr. Dr A. Ikpenwa quickly gave the opening remarks. He emphasized the importance of this year’s games competition, noting that it was preparatory for the forthcoming All Major Seminary Games at SS Peter and Paul Seminary, Ibadan.
He also enjoined all participants to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherly love in the course of the competition. Having made this preliminary speech, he declared the 2O14 Inter- house Games open.
The first Football Match of the day was between St. Gregory’s House and St. Francis’ House. Accompanied by the referees, the players of the two teams, in a single file marched into the field.
After a brief introduction by the referees and the captains of both sides, Fr. A. Ikpenwa did the kickoff at exactly 4:00pm. This finally moved the wheel of other sporting events such as Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, and Lawn Tennis. It also set rolling the second match played at the Field B.
